The Dutch arrived in North America in 1601 and organized the Dutch West India Company in 1618. In 1621, the Dutch West India Company established a colony of New Netherlands in the Hudson River Basin.

Dutch Governor-General Keft launched resistance against the British in 1641 and 1642, and the war lasted until 1645. The colony was greatly destroyed. In 1664, the British sent warships to New Armsdam, defeating the Dutch and occupying a vast area of the Hudson River.

King Charles II gave this land to his brother, the Duke of York, and changed his name to New York. In 1685, the Duke of New York inherited the throne and was called James II. The New York colony became a colony under the jurisdiction of the British Crown.
