In 1664, the Duke of York gifted the land between the Hudson and Delaware to two nobles-Barclays and Cutler, and appointed Cutler as governor.
Cutlert once served as governor of Jersey in the English Channel, so he called this colony New Jersey. Two nobles sold their land to settlers, so a large number of colonists poured into the New Jersey colony from the British mainland and the Connecticut colony.
In 1702, the colony of New Jersey was changed to a colony under the jurisdiction of the British Crown.
