Selina took the file and left. She didn't bother to care what Luke was doing.
After she left, Luke closed the door, turned around, and approached Elsa's desk with a calm face: "Boss, Selena and I are going back to our hometown in Texas in a few days. We want to take a vacation."
Elsa's mind turned and she understood immediately.
She rolled her eyes in annoyance: "So, you are desperately trying to get the case now. Tell me, I want to go back and play for a few days this time."
Luke slapped his hand generously: "Five days."
Elsa was shocked: "Are you kidding? You all have to take three days off when we go back on the weekend?"
Luke and his friend had never taken such a long vacation on their own.
Luke chuckled: "It's a two-day weekend plus a five-day holiday, so we're going to take a week off."
Elsa: “What the hell!”
Luke then explained, "Selina's birthday is in a few days, and I want to take her home to see her family. You know, we've been away from home for almost half a year. My family came to visit once, but Selina's family really doesn't have time to come over."
Selena's father, Marino, works on a ranch. He is a long-term worker and stays on the ranch almost all year round.
Her mother Sandra had to take care of three younger siblings, so it was impossible for her to bring three small children to Los Angeles.
In fact, Selena hasn't seen her family for almost half a year since she came to work in Houston.
Elsa smacked her lips, put her hand on her forehead, thought for about half a minute, and could only nod helplessly: "Okay."
Luke and Selina are her staunchest supporters and most capable detectives.
Strictly speaking, Selena and she are kind of best friends.
Selena only goes home to visit her family once every six months, and it was on her birthday, so she couldn't refuse this request.
Besides, Luke and his partner were going back on paid leave, so telling her about it was just a sign of respect for her.
Seeing Luke turning around and leaving with satisfaction, Elsa couldn't help but ask, "Have you told her?"
Luke turned around and smiled brightly: "Birthday surprise! Of course it has to be kept secret."
Elsa snorted, lowered her head to look at the file, and pointed with her finger: "Get out."
Damn it, among all my partners, why can't I find someone so considerate? The Iron Lady suddenly felt sad and heartbroken.
No! Luke definitely counted, but she and Luke had been partners for such a short time that she didn’t get to enjoy this kind of treatment before her birthday.
Otherwise, wouldn’t it be a wonderful birthday to have a caring and capable partner to accompany you back to Miami to celebrate your birthday in the sun!
Just like that, Elsa, the strong woman, also fell into a rare state of sadness.
Luke began to prepare privately and worked hard on the case for several days, thus completing his holiday work in advance.
This time when he returns, if the situation is right, he can go somewhere else to have some fun.
It would be fine for Selena to take a week off for her birthday and to visit relatives. It wasn't his birthday, so three days of rest in Shackelford was enough for him.
With this schedule, Selena has been so busy in recent days that she didn't notice at all that she was quietly approaching the age of 26.
It was not until the afternoon of April 21st that Luke took her home early from work: "Pack up your things, let's go home."
Selina: “Huh?” Aren’t they at home now
Luke: "Go back to Shackleford. I miss Claire and Joseph. Don't you miss Talia, Andrea and Julio?"
Selina: “What?!” She was pushed into the room by Luke with a confused look on her face.
After a moment's pause, she cheered and quickly searched the room.
She basically didn't need to bring her own things, as many of her things at home were not moved in.
But she could finally take back the various gifts she had bought for her family these days.
She wasn’t like Luke.
Luke likes to use FedEx to send the gifts he buys directly home, but Selena likes to hand over the gifts to her family personally.
So, there are already a lot of gifts piled up in her room.
Including leather shoes, belts, hats and sunglasses for Marino, cosmetics, clothes, accessories and bags for Sandra, and toys and handicrafts for the three younger brothers and sisters, all of which filled two large bags.
Fortunately, Luke only brought a small backpack with almost nothing in it, and Selina herself only had a small shoulder bag, so the things she brought were similar to those for a normal trip.
The two drove to the airport and boarded their scheduled flight directly to Dallas.
In the afterglow of the sunset, the two drove a rented car, exhausted, from Dallas back to the small town of Shackelford.
Not long after the car entered the town, a police car drove up from behind.
A middle-aged white sheriff turned around and saw the two people in the car window. He greeted them in surprise: "Haha, Selina, little Luke, why are you here! I was wondering if this car looked strange."
Luke and the others smiled and greeted, "Hey, Bob, are you on night shift again today?"
Bob's fat face suddenly fell: "I just got off work, okay? How could it be that I am on night shift again?"
Luke and the others laughed: "It's okay, you can sleep in the bureau anyway when you're on night shift."
Bob was speechless.
After waving goodbye to each other, Luke and the other continued on their way to Selina's house.
Talia, Andrea and Julio, who were playing in the yard, didn't pay any attention to the car approaching.
Meidao, the old golden retriever who was lying quietly on the porch, suddenly raised his body, started wagging his tail, and stared at the car.
It smelled a familiar scent, the scent of its little master who had been with it since childhood.
After uttering two not-so-loud cries, it stood up from the ground a little slowly, and with no longer brisk steps, it trotted towards the car.
The three children then noticed the approaching car, stopped playing and looked over.
Talia suddenly screamed: "It's Selina, Selina is back."
As she said that, she also ran after the US dollar.
Luke was considerate and stopped the car in advance to let Selina get out of the car with an excited face. He watched her hugging Meidao who rushed over to him. She laughed happily and rubbed its big head desperately: "Did you miss me, Meidao?"
Luke smiled, closed the car door, and continued driving.
Seeing his little brother Julio who was the last one left, he called out, "Hey, open the door for me first. Do you still want a gift?"
Julio stopped and said, "Ah, Luke, did you bring me a gift?"
Luke smiled and shook his head: "Selina brought you a lot of gifts."
Julio quickly turned around, ran a few steps, and opened the gate of the courtyard.
When Luke parked his car in the yard, the four siblings and Meidao were already in a mess.
He got out of the car with a smile and happened to meet Sandra who came out to check after hearing the noise.
Smiling, he walked forward and gave the beautiful mother a hug: "Sandra, it's been a long time since we last met. You are still as beautiful and charming as ever."
