The drizzles gradually became more intense, becoming heavier and heavier until they turned into heavy rain, hitting the city densely.
Arthur sat by the window. From this position he could just see the Dunling Pagoda in the rain and fog. The tall tower turned into a gray-blue silhouette.
“It’s been a tough winter.”
Arthur muttered, the rain that had been going on for several days was getting heavier, and after that would be the harsh winter. He could imagine the whole city being frozen.
After living in Old Dunling for so long, Arthur has become accustomed to these things. The steam pipes burst, the streets were full of water and fog, the maintenance workers rushed back and forth, and the sound of knocking on metal was endless, even in the middle of the night.
Just thinking about what will happen next, the current severe cold weather will undoubtedly add more gloom to it all.
"The evacuation has begun, Arthur."
Zuo Zhen's voice came from the communicator. Arthur breathed a sigh of relief when he heard this. At least the work in the death row was still proceeding in an orderly manner.
"I understand. Once the evacuation is over, we can focus on preparing for war."
"So... there won't be any changes to the list?" Zuo Zhen asked.
"What's wrong?" Arthur was puzzled.
"Eve is not on the list. I remember she is your daughter."
Hearing this, Arthur's eyes were slightly dazed, but soon became ruthless again.
"Well, so?"
"I thought..."
"It's nothing to worry about. She is now a member of the Purge Agency. I think she wouldn't accept it if I did that. What do you think?"
Arthur said expressionlessly, "Isn't Zuo Tang also your nephew? What constrains us now is duty, not family affection."
There was no sound from the other end. After a long while, Zuo Zhen spoke slowly.
"Okay, I understand."
Arthur lowered his eyes. In fact, he had talked to Eve about this once, but judging from the current situation, the ending was obvious. Instead of running away in a hurry, it would be better to go to the end together.
"So... goodbye? Arthur, you're a good leader."
Zuo Zhen suddenly started talking about something else, and after a brief electric sound, his voice disappeared completely.
Arthur looked a little unnatural. He didn't know why, but he always felt that Zuo Zhen's final farewell seemed to carry a different emotion.
He hated these strangers a little. They came from far away, bringing with them dusty stories and full of blood. Lorenzo was like this, and so was Zuo Zhen.
Whenever Arthur thought of Zuo Zhen's face, he felt that it was the face of a dead person. His skin was as shriveled as a dead tree, overlapping each other. The grayness of his eyes was hidden in the heavy shadows. In the deepest darkness, there was not a trace of light.
It's really unsettling.
Arthur stood up, picked up the communicator and pistol, and it was time for him to take action.
He had made a decision with Zuo Zhen before. In order to avoid being beheaded by Roger, he would not appear in the same place with Zuo Zhen. In fact, there is another rule. In order to preserve the manpower as much as possible, Zuo Zhen will be in the sun and execute most of the orders, while Arthur needs to act in the shadows for the time being to avoid being noticed by Roger.
