Chapter 729: A moment of mercy

Jenkins pointed his cane at the man's throat while ordering Chocolate to do something. The cat looked up at Jenkins' face, then trotted into the living room, and disappeared into the corridor after a turn. It appeared again after more than ten seconds. Since it didn't call, it meant that the box of money was still there.

"Isn't it a thief?"

Seeing that the man had no pockets to hide things, Jenkins turned his head to check the knife on the door:

"So, you're... the midnight serial killer?"

Mr. Hood mentioned this at the party, but Jenkins didn't remember it very clearly because it was just a common people thing.

"I warn you not to move, or I don't know what I will do."

He threatened that he found a stack of old newspapers on the shoe cabinet that he planned to give to his maid Mrs. Mahart tomorrow. Poor people always like to use such things to paste walls.

He found last weekend's evening paper, and there was indeed a report on the midnight serial murder on the front page.

"Did you do this too?"

He shook the newspaper, the little man with red nose still groaned and didn't reply, he probably wouldn't admit it. Jenkins' face changed, and he raised his cane again and slapped the man on the shoulder, and then regardless of his reaction, he crushed his wrist bone with his foot.

The law and order on St. George's Street has always been very good. Although it may be because there was/lived a widow pregnant with the son of the evil god, it does not affect the reputation of this street. Patrolmen would pass by here every hour at night, and most of the policemen knew that the famous writer lived here, so when he asked for help, the policemen with kerosene lamps readily agreed to go with him. Together, he brought the intruder to Carfax Yard.

The name of the Sage Church is still useful here. The inspector who received Jenkins only allowed him to leave after asking what happened. The detective promised to investigate the origin of this person as soon as possible and give Jenkins a perfect explanation.

Early the next Friday morning, Jenkins read the relevant news from the morning paper. Didn't mention his name, just said that a murderer had been caught in St. George's Street or something.

There were clerical staff placed by the church in the Carfax field. They reported Jenkins' incident to the church last night, and the church notified Dad. So the father also asked Jenkins what happened that morning, and after hearing that it was just a matter between ordinary people, he didn't take it to heart.

"That's right, it won't cause any major trouble anyway."

Dad also told Jenkins about what happened yesterday evening. The A-12-2-6083, [Statue of the Witness of the Dead], has been housed by the Church behind the Vientiane Gate. And the identity of the man who died because of the theft was also found out.

There was no conspiracy in it, he was just a bankrupt small shopkeeper, because of evil thoughts in his heart, a mistake led to his death.

"The man's surname is Gelt. He also has a wife and three children at home. The youngest child is only 4 years old."

Pop told Jenkins.

"So, are we going to send them a sum of money? Even though Gelt has paid for what he did, the family is innocent."

Jenkins thought for a while before speaking.

"I think so too, and after all, we are also responsible for our bad custody."

With that said, he took out a small paper bag from under the counter:

"Here is thirty pounds. You can add some more and send it at noon."

This is a rather large amount. One must know that Alexia is currently serving as Miss Stuart's tutor, and her nominal annual salary is roughly only this amount when converted into national currency. This is still due to the generosity of the Stuart royal family. You must know that ordinary novice tutors may not earn 10 pounds a year.

(Note: Food and accommodation are included, and part of the cost of carriage, horses and clothing will be borne)

"I understand, let's make up 50 pounds, that's all we can help."

As he said that, Jenkins took out some change from his pocket and put it in the paper bag, and the father wrote the address of Geert's house on the note and handed it to Jenkins.

"Um?"

Jenkins raised an eyebrow.

"Any questions?"

The old man looked at the address again in doubt, and made sure that he read it correctly.

"No, no, no, no problem, sir."

Jenkins covered up his surprise and said, because Gelt was Mr. Barnard's neighbor.

After studying and working in the morning, he set off with chocolates. He had been to that street the night he became a god for the first time, so he could tell the specific location when he got in the carriage.

The carriage drove through the city, dropping him off at the block's entrance, and Jenkins walked toward his goal on foot. He thought for a while, walked into the alley and called out the black robe, and changed into a new image. He is also a young man of the same age, but his face shape and hair color have changed a lot, but he still looks handsome.

This street is a residential area, and strangers rarely come here, but probably because of the help of the handsome face, the residents here did not suspect that this is a thief with evil intentions.

The Gelt family lived in the middle of the street. When Jenkins walked past, a middle-aged woman was clearing snow in the yard with a child on her back. The eldest child of the family is eighteen years old and should be working now. As for the youngest daughter, who is twelve years old, she probably stays at the house to prepare lunch.

Glancing to the side, the door of Barnard's house was closed, and he didn't know if anyone was at home.

"Excuse me, may I excuse you, are you Mrs. Gelt?"

He stood outside the fence and asked the woman who was working. The woman raised her head in a daze. She didn't expect someone to visit at this time.

"Yes, hello."

She was sure she had never seen the young man in front of her.

"Finally found it. It's not easy. Is Mr. Gelt at home?"

Jenkins asked again, then realized that the question was a bit off.

Sure enough, when the woman heard this, her complexion immediately became sad. Calculating from the time, she was probably called to identify the body last night, and she still hasn't recovered yet.

"Sorry sorry."

The young man hurriedly said, and then took out the small paper bag from his pocket:

"Since Mr. Gelt is not here, it is indeed this address that he left behind, so I will leave it to you."

Pass the paper bag across the fence and hand it to the woman:

"A year ago, my boss had a transaction with Mr. Geert. At that time, something happened at home. The boss left Nolan in a hurry, and the final payment was not settled. This time I came to deliver the final payment, which also included part of the transaction. Interest."

PS: Regarding the embarrassing status and income of governesses, especially governesses, I found an interesting article about "Jane Eyre". Combining that part of the material and the world view of this world, I have a description in the article. Everyone is interested in using this as a keyword to search.
