Chapter 585: Focus on the future

Views:

The blue dot is a cow, and we don’t know whether it can be pulled back or not.

On his father's side, Cheng Ran learned that Fulong Company had held a strategic seminar for several consecutive days. The strategic seminar decided the choices that Fulong would make among three wireless communication technology projects.

The three projects are CDMA, FHS PHS and GSM.

China's communications sector is undergoing drastic changes. Adjustments brought about by the upgrading of the industrial structure will lead to even more turbulent patterns in the next two years. Posts and Telecommunications will soon be split into Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom. Telecom will be split into north and south to further break the monopoly, eventually forming a pattern in which Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom will share the world in three parts.

In this regard, different operators have different choices for using wireless communication technology services. Each operator has its own chosen business direction, and this is often a decision that is ultimately made after academic struggles within the operator. Once the business is determined, it will be tendered to manufacturers. At this time, manufacturers are required to plan ahead and even have a strategic vision, and make early plans and preparations in related technical fields in order to participate in the corresponding competition.

This is a black box game. Companies that win the lottery will usher in a period of rapid development. On the contrary, those that miss the opportunity, even if they were once prosperous, may be left behind in the blink of an eye and abandoned by the rapidly changing landscape and waves.

Therefore, such strategic decisions are important and determine the future.

At this time, the direction and thoughts within the top management of each manufacturer are also emerging strongly.

This was also the time for Cheng Ran, the rumored "Fulong Koi", to show his prowess. On the eve of the strategic seminar, several vice presidents of the Fulong Eight Vajras in Chengdu came to visit one after another.

Some people came to chat with him, but they talked about the three major standard technologies, their application prospects, which one is advanced and which one is backward, and finally asked him if he had any opinions and suggestions. At this time, no matter what Cheng Ran talked about, it might affect some of the strategic considerations and directions of the strategic seminar of the president and senior engineers.

Now he is involved in Fulong's strategic decision-making in the form of a "mascot", because it was all because of his voices and arguments at the critical moments of Fulong's development.

Of course, there is no way to combine this phenomenon with Cheng Ran's prediction scientifically, so we can only blame it on metaphysics. This is like a short story Cheng Ran once heard, where there was a huge banyan tree at an air force airport. Instead of transplanting it, the airport used it for every flight test and mission, because the previous few times the tree was dug, a plane crashed every time it was dug.

Of course, this kind of joke is only for circulation, and people just laugh it off after hearing it. However, Cheng Ran has a similar story in Fulong.

Tian Feng, the vice president of R&D who has always been on good terms with Cheng Ran's family, came to the house. Xu Lan happened to be there and said he was a rare guest. Tian Feng brought a lunch box. When he opened it, it was full of golden fried broad beans. It was extremely crispy and sprinkled with salt and pepper powder. It tasted crispy and fragrant. He smiled at Xu Lan, "When Cheng Ran was a child in Shanhai, he often came to my house to eat fried broad beans. Hey, every time I fried broad beans, this kid would always 'happen' to pass by my door. His nose is so sharp... Every time, my two pockets are stuffed full and my hands are full of oil. I ate a lot. Anyway, I haven't made it for so many years. Today I was in a good mood and bought some fresh broad beans. I made some and sent it to your Cheng kid."

Cheng Ran took the fried broad beans from Tian Feng and took a few in his mouth. They were fragrant, really fragrant, and tasted exactly the same as when he was a child. Then Cheng Ran glanced and saw Tian Feng sneakily took out three bamboo sticks with CDMA, FHS, and GSM written on them from his pocket, blocked the words on them, turned them behind his back, and handed them to Cheng Ran who was eating the fried broad beans, with a smile on his face.

"Come on, have a smoke."

There are many similar things like this. After the strategic seminar, Cheng Ran is looking forward to a discussion with Cheng Feiyang.

Cheng Ran certainly understood what this R&D dispute meant. Last year, China Unicom's CDMA95 bidding, which was originally planned to be launched, was temporarily aborted due to an intellectual property dispute with Qualcomm of the United States. The time for the next bidding was still undecided, which caused constant speculation from all parties.

Later, other manufacturers believed that it would be difficult for China Unicom to restart the CDMA bidding in the short term, so they invested in the more advanced CDMA2000 technology. However, ZTE bet that China Unicom would soon restart the bidding and still planned CDMA95. As expected, China Unicom did not adopt more advanced technical standards for bidding five years later as other manufacturers expected. Instead, it quickly restarted the bidding for the CDMA95 project. ZTE easily won the bid and was responsible for China Unicom construction indicators in more than 20 provinces and cities across the country, reaping the rewards of billions of dollars.

China Unicom chose CDMA technology, while China Telecom, which was spun off due to major changes in the telecommunications field, chose FHS technology, commonly known as "Xiaolingtong".

Other manufacturers believed that the PHS technology was backward and would be eliminated sooner or later, so they did not invest in it. On the contrary, ZTE and a small company called UT Scanda continued to cultivate the PHS market. The PHS experienced unexpected explosive growth in China. In just a few years, the number of users reached 60 million. The domestic market became the world of UT and ZTE, which not only made considerable profits but also established solid customer relationships.

In just one or two years, UT has grown from an unknown small company to a star company with an annual revenue of more than 10 billion. Before that, Fulong also took two years and a combination of measures to achieve a revenue of nearly 4 billion.

Of course, these are situations that will arise in the future.

After the meeting, Cheng Feiyang went straight home. After hanging up his coat, he pushed open the door of the study and sat down on the sofa next to Cheng Ran who was doing homework at the desk.

"CDMA technology is a transitional technology. We believe it will be eliminated in the future, especially the FHS business. However, even if it is a transitional technology, considering the current domestic demand, it may not be useless. Therefore, we decided to retain Fulong's CDMA95 team and FHS technical team. However, these two directions are ultimately just to resist competitors and prevent them from taking all the market in this field while we have nothing to do with it. But this is not the main direction. The main direction is still GSM. At present, we must concentrate our efforts on major tasks and invest one-third of the company's R&D efforts in tackling GSM. The future development trend of the communications industry will inevitably be the 3G field, and the GSM 3G standard WCDMA technology direction is our goal."

Cheng Ran nodded secretly. In fact, there was no need for him to intervene in Fulong's strategic decision-making. Fulong would retain the business of CDMA technology and PHS technology. That was to say, when China Unicom and China Telecom bid for these two technologies in the future, Fulong might not be without the ability to fight.

But the largest market share will definitely be given to ZTE, especially in the field of PHS, which will still be occupied by UT. It's just that in the future, they will no longer be unable to get a share of these two aspects. Just getting a share of them will be enough.

On the contrary, Fulong has a clear strategic awareness and does not invest too much time and energy in these transitional technologies. Instead, it invests funds and R&D capabilities in the 3G field, which is an all-out attack on the future.

This strategy was formed. UT in later generations is a good example. Although it was fattened by Xiaolingtong and blinded by profits, it did not focus on the future. As a result, when Xiaolingtong technology was eliminated, UT's revenue plummeted and it was eliminated by the times.

Cheng Ran felt that Cheng Feiyang no longer needed any reminders from him, because what he saw and decided on the front line were more acute and far-sighted.

Cheng Feiyang said, "Since the final direction is the 3G WCDMA standard, we must start planning. This winter vacation, we are going to the United States to conduct technical cooperation and introduce patents with the United States... Do you want to go with me? Didn't your mother say that you haven't been out for a long time? This time, I will take you on a trip. We adults will do things, and you can have fun..."
