A college is a college, a place dedicated to educating people, and its atmosphere is obviously shielded from the noise outside.
After walking through the Arc de Triomphe-like gate, Charles clearly found that he, with his fierce look on his face, was out of place among the students around him, just like a wolf released into a group of sheep.
As expected, Charles immediately caught the attention of the sheepdog. "Hey! You! Stop!"
Three men in black uniforms came over. When they smelled the fishy smell on Charles, their expressions suddenly changed.
Before they could call for help, Charles took out the gear card. "I want to see Professor Koch."
Soon Charles was brought to a teaching building, and without him noticing, there were already more than a dozen security guards accompanying him.
"Is this necessary?"
"Governor Swan said that the children in the academy are the future of the British Isles. Even though you already have his permission, we cannot let them be in any danger. Please forgive me."
Charles looked at the weapons bulging from their clothes, said nothing, pushed open the glass door and walked in.
With such a large group of people leading the way, Charles quickly found Dr. Koch's laboratory.
"Why are you here?" The doctor was a little surprised by Charles' arrival.
"If you have nothing to do, come and take a look." Charles turned his gaze to the old man on the other side of the stage.
Charles' initial impression of this man was the black and white afro, the mustache, and the same dirty white coat as a doctor.
He was wearing a pair of what looked like a pair of small binoculars and was welding something.
There were three or four young men helping him nearby, and they seemed to be his assistants.
"Well, can that thing be repaired?" Charles pulled over a stool and sat down.
"It's under construction. It doesn't matter whether it's repaired or not. Anyway, I tried my best. I hope the island will leave me a piece of cemetery. I like it to be spacious."
Charles looked at the doctor's ugly face with age spots, nodded after a few seconds and said, "Okay."
In the empty room, no one spoke anymore, only the crackling sound of welding could be heard.
The tranquility was finally broken by Koch himself, who picked up a black chip with tweezers and danced with excitement.
"Hey, hey! I'm such a genius! It's hard to imagine that such a small thing has computing power that's faster than the best difference engine in our school. If we can figure it out, it will be a revolutionary change!"
"Bang, bang, bang!" The doctor banged the iron wine pot on the table impatiently. "Fix it quickly! If you can't fix it, I'll throw all those things into shit instead of giving them to you!"
"Why are you rushing? You country bumpkins have no respect for technology. Things like this must be done slowly."
After Kochi finished speaking, he took out a tablet with a broken back panel and began to carefully install the chip.
Charles could see that it was the tablet the doctor had used before.
"How is your matter? Is there any difficulty?" the doctor asked after taking a sip of wine.
"Swan didn't stop us. As for the submarine, the people at the shipyard are discussing it. It shouldn't be a big problem." Charles took out his cell phone and swiped it with his thumb.
"That's right. Swan has already offended enough people. He probably doesn't want to have enemies all over the world. After all, even the worst person needs a few friends."
"Are you scolding me?"
"You are the captain, how dare I do that?"
Charles felt that there had been some change in the doctor's mentality, and a hint of relief appeared in his voice, which had always been full of bitterness and hatred.
"I've left the power supply for your phone on the ship. If you need it, go get it yourself. Remember, it runs on whale oil."
"Um."
A smile appeared on Charles' face, but he quickly suppressed it.
"Laugh! You only know how to laugh! When you get to my age, you will cry!"
"How old are you this year?"
"I forgot, probably around ninety."
"Then don't worry, I don't think I'll live to be as old as you."
As time went by, the number of students on campus gradually decreased.
Charles took out his pocket watch and found that it was already 9 o'clock in the evening. As his phone still had some power, Charles set the time on his phone to the same as that on his pocket watch.
Touching the sweat on his forehead with his hand, Kochi took a deep breath as he looked at the result in front of him. He turned his head and looked at the doctor next to him. "I fixed this thing easily."
The doctor rushed over with his iron legs and picked up the tablet with both hands excitedly.
He fiddled with it quickly, but found that the screen was still black and there was no movement at all.
Seeing this scene, Charles' heart sank slightly, "Could it be that I really guessed right? Is this thing completely broken?"
"Why isn't it lit?" The doctor's voice trembled a little.
"Of course it won't light up. This thing isn't even powered yet, how could it possibly light up?"
Kochi's light words made Charles, who was watching the show, want to beat him up. It was rare for someone with this kind of personality to live to this day.
After the doctor's roar shook off a layer of dust from the ceiling, Koch asked his assistant to carry out the power supply equipment that had been prepared long ago.
"Ding~" As the flat screen lit up, Charles quietly walked behind the doctor and looked at the screen over his shoulder.
Judging from the interface, the tablet's operating system is relatively primitive and has only a few functions.
"Swish." The doctor's fingers slid across the screen and soon found more than a dozen videos. He clicked on the earliest one.
Inside was a man in a white coat. He looked a little unwell. After being sluggish for several seconds, he covered his forehead with his hand and began to speak like a sleepwalker.
"Hello, my name is Gray Herman. I don't know who the person watching the video is. I hope he is a descendant of the Herman family. It doesn't matter if he is a human being or not, as long as he is human."
The doctor patted his chest, a little excited. "I am, I am!"
The person in the video thought for a moment and then spoke again.
"I don't know what the outside world will be like after this video is opened. If everything is normal, that would be great, and you can laugh loudly at your cowardly ancestors. But if not, through this video, you will know how your ancestors destroyed themselves."
Charles' breathing became heavier and he moved closer.
"Friends, what is science? I hope you know the meaning of the word science by then."
The people inside asked and answered themselves:
“Science is an orderly system of knowledge based on testable explanations and predictions about the form and organization of objective things. It is systematized and formalized knowledge.”
“Whether it is fire in ancient times or electricity and nuclear energy later on, the goal is to observe first, intervene later, and finally achieve control.”
"We humans are more powerful than other species. We can systematize any knowledge and pass it on to our next generation. That's why our species will become stronger and stronger."
"But if there is something that has no rules and cannot be observed, and our previous experience is completely useless to them, what should we humans do?"
