The Human Cub’s Guide to Wasteland Survival

Chapter 49

There were no more zombies on the road, only corpses lying all over the ground. The air was filled with a strong smell of blood, which made people want to vomit.

The corridor was very quiet. Neither of them spoke. Yan Bubu could only hear Feng Chen's breathing and his own intense heartbeat.

This passage is curved. After running for a while, I heard footsteps coming from the other end of the curve. It sounded like there were a lot of people, messy and heavy, all running forward.

Feng Chen didn't think that they were a group of living people in this situation. They looked more like zombies running under the guidance of Major General Lin and Colonel Yu.

Things happened just as he expected. As the distance gradually shortened, a large group of running zombies appeared in his field of vision.

There were several hundred zombies, lined up in a long black line, with no end in sight. They swung their arms mechanically and ran silently, the scene looked extremely weird and horrifying.

Feng Chen paused, but then followed again, keeping a distance from the group of zombies.

He didn't know if zombies could sense the presence of ordinary people through smell, but the passage was filled with a choking smell of blood, which completely covered the smell of him and Yan Bubu. Now he just had to walk lightly and not alarm them.

Although Yan Bubu had just been face to face with zombies, he knew that they were dead. Now seeing so many living zombies with missing limbs and covered in blood, he was so scared that he could hardly breathe.

He took a few sips of air and asked Feng Chen in a trembling voice: "Should we rush through them?"

Feng Chen also lowered his voice: "Don't rush over. There are so many zombies that we can't rush through them all. But you have to remember not to make any noise, so as not to be discovered by them."

"Oh, no..." Yan Bubu heaved a sigh of relief and assured, "I definitely won't make any noise."

Feng Chen lifted Yan Bubu up, freeing his hands, and pulled up the real-time map on his watch.

The map showed that the length of this emergency passage was five miles, and they had only run halfway through it. If the calculation was correct, the water in the underground resettlement site would be level with the cave entrance and would soon flood in.

Feng Chen leaned close to Yan Bubu's ear and whispered, "The water will flood in soon. No matter what I do, you have to hold me tight."

Yan Bubu adjusted the position of his bag, touched the code box through the cloth, and nodded: "Okay, I will hold you tight."

"Don't be afraid even if the water floods in. The water level will rise slowly. It won't sweep us away all at once. When the zombies in front of us are submerged by the water, we will swim forward and shake them off."

"Okay." Yan Bubu continued to nod, but then he thought of something and put his mouth close to Feng Chen's ear and asked in a serious tone: "What if they can swim too?"

Feng Chen said: "I don't think so."

"Why?" Yan Bubu asked.

Feng Chen thought about it and said, "Because the zombies in the movies don't know how to do that."

"Oh, that definitely won't happen." Yan Bubu felt relieved.

The group of zombies continued to run forward, and gunshots could be heard occasionally from the front, which should be from Major General Lin and Colonel Yu.

Feng Chen knew that there was no need for them to make such a big noise. The only explanation for doing so was to make the zombies along the way target them, preventing him and Yan Bubu from getting out.
