Chapter 7: God and the Church

"Is it really that I am just too unlucky?"

Xia De was pondering the encounter with Dr. Schneider just now. Fortunately, the growling sound of his stomach brought him back to reality. After all, the commission was the most important thing now.

With less than twelve hours left before the crossing, Shade had to learn to endure hunger. If he had crossed into a forest, he might have had a chance to hunt, and if it was a chaotic time, he might have had a chance to get food.

It was such an orderly big city that one had to obey the order if he wanted to fill his stomach. Xia De stood at the door of the newspaper office and looked at the club where the "upper class" came in and out not far away, hoping that the feeling of hunger would pass. Fortunately, now he only had to stand in the fog and wait. If he needed to chase, he really had no choice.

"I've never heard of a time traveler going hungry."

He wanted to blame himself for his incompetence, but there was nothing he could do about the current situation. He could only hope that the lady would show up soon so that he could submit a report to his employer.

While standing there thinking about something, someone handed over a flyer, and Shade took it. Looking up, he saw a smiling round-faced missionary wearing a white priest robe, with the church's holy emblem on his left chest and a black pendant hanging on his chest, distributing papers to the people nearby.

He looked down and saw that what was stuffed into his hand was a church propaganda piece belonging to the Church of War and Peace. When Shad was rummaging through items in the house, he learned about the religious situation in this world and knew that this was one of the orthodox churches.

In the past of this world, there were many stories about gods, but in the present era, only five gods are officially recognized by the government and the people. Therefore, the mainstream belief in the world is these five gods.

Peace Father, also known as the God of War and Peace, his holy emblem is a white dove with light gray wings;

Mr. Dawn, also known as the God of Light and Shadow, has a brass-colored ring with a notch on top.

The Lantern Man, also known as the God of the Sun and the Earth, has a golden sun emblem;

Lady of Creation, also known as the Goddess of Creation and Destruction, whose holy symbol is a wrench, silver in color;

The Lord of All Things, also known as the God of Nature and Evil, whose holy emblem is two overlapping leaves, one yellow and one green. The old man who transported the corpse not long ago is a member of the Church of Nature.

"Hmm? Why are the priesthoods preached by the true gods all relative concepts?"

Thinking of this, Xia De suddenly had more thoughts about this world. But that kind of inexplicable feeling, he couldn't express it better to himself. In the vagueness, he seemed to touch some kind of power, and a whisper sounded in his ear:

You feel the 'miracle'.

This time it was a "miracle" of one of the four elements. So far, Shade had touched all of them except for the blasphemy. According to the information mentioned by the voice in his mind, it seemed that only by touching the complete four elements could one be qualified to touch the mysterious door to the extraordinary.

"It seems to be easier than I thought. I have already learned three-quarters of it in just half a day."

Then the woman's laughter rang in my head again, and it was really beautiful.

The five orthodox churches are not hostile to each other, and their relations are at least much better than the relations between human kingdoms.

The strength of the church varies in different regions, but in the pearl of the north, the city of Tobysk, churches of all five churches exist, and there is relatively "friendly" competition among them.

Xia De thought about these things, looked at the printed material in his hand, and lamented that he didn't need to "invent" the printing press himself. Although the printing quality was not very high, at least...

With a wide eye, he suddenly discovered important information. Most of the flyers introduced the teachings of the True God, the Peaceful Father, and welcomed believers and pagans to go to the church to listen to the lectures and sermons scheduled every week.

The important thing is that at the bottom of the paper it says that if you hold this flyer and line up at the church entrance at 5:30 pm on weekends, you can get free relief food. And in small print it says that no matter how long the line is, as long as you show up before 6 pm, you will definitely get a number plate and get food.

Even though it was embarrassing to receive this kind of relief food, at least it let Shade know that he would not starve to death today. He touched his nose, wrote down the address of the Church of War and Peace, and then folded the leaflet with a strong smell of ink very solemnly and put it in Mr. Hamilton's notebook.

I thanked the god silently in my heart. Although the feeling of hunger still existed, at least I felt much better.

"The luck isn't that bad actually."

Xia De thought to himself that he knew that once Mrs. Lazoya, who was under investigation, entered the club, she would not come out for an hour or two, so he wondered if he could find the missionary to talk to her.

In this world, belief in God is universal, and atheists are a minority among the minority. Of course, as long as you don't publicly shout that you don't believe in God, it's actually okay, but Shade is interested in learning about these so-called true gods. In a world where faith exists, it is more dangerous to know nothing about these things.

He was still thinking about how to start a conversation with the other party, but the missionary had already walked away. He felt very sorry, but did not chase him. Instead, he continued to stand there and wait. After all, when he had a firm foothold, he would have plenty of time to understand everything.

There were actually quite a few people standing at the door of the newspaper office like him, most of them were reporters waiting for new news, and a few were idle people working for the newspaper office. Today was Saturday, and even though the weather was foggy, Valente Pedestrian Street, as the main road, was very busy, so it was not surprising to see so many people standing here.

Although it is called a "pedestrian street", carriages are not prohibited from passing through. While observing the club, Shade looked at the pedestrians and carriages passing by. He thought this would help him better integrate into the place.

There was a burning smell in the air, which was of course the smog, but it wasn't a strong smell, just a lingering mist that grew thicker as the sun moved from overhead to the west.

Xia De was worried about his physical condition. In his fanciful thoughts, he saw another carriage parked in front of the club. He immediately looked up and saw that it was Mr. Lawrence, the client's husband.

"It's interesting, an unexpected gain."

He whispered, noting down the current time and writing the information in a notebook.

The client, Mrs. Lawrence, was very generous, and if her husband was caught having a tryst with his lover at the club on the day the report was submitted, she might be able to give him an extra reward.

"But it's also possible that an angry woman implicated me."

Xia De was daydreaming in his mind, hoping to see Mrs. Lazoya welcoming Mr. Lawrence at the door of the club, but unfortunately Mr. Lawrence walked into the club by himself.

Even though they were a street apart, Shad could see the smile and excitement on Mr. Lawrence's face. He definitely didn't come to the club to play cards or drink tea.

"Good luck."

He said in his heart, shaking his head and recording in detail what Mr. Lawrence was wearing today to prove the authenticity of his report.
