Soon the two of them came to a room with a guard standing guard. Inside was a huge screen. Behind the screen was a four-meter-high brass mechanical box with some exhaust pipes on it.
As Gordoncha typed on his keyboard, black smoke billowed from the exhaust pipes above the boxes.
"A coal-burning computer? Doesn't Earthsea already have electricity? Or is this a different direction of development?" Charles looked at the huge machine thoughtfully.
"Ah~ I found it, Governor. The man is now on the third underground floor. Do you need me to bring him up?" Gordon asked humbly.
"No, take me to see him," Charles replied.
"Okay, this way please."
To enter the third underground floor, one not only has to pass through several heavy gates but also undergo layers of inspections. The Relics Research Institute is already strict enough, but it is several times stricter here than outside.
When he came underground, Charles felt a little cold. The breath he exhaled turned white. The air here was also a little humid. This place was not suitable for human habitation.
As Charles continued to walk down under the guidance of Gordon, he passed a door and his keen hearing allowed him to hear the sound of water inside.
Charles walked in without any warning. What caught his eye was a glass wall with water inside. Two groups of men and women were walking slowly.
Some people in white coats were writing something in notebooks.
"What is this doing?" Charles asked curiously.
"Well, it's just an immature experiment. The Foundation has some technology that can improve human lungs and allow people to survive underwater." Gordon came over and explained.
Charles' pupils shrank slightly. His guess was right. The Foundation clearly had the technology to save the Earthsea humans, but they were indifferent! No matter what their purpose was, at least it was definitely not for the sake of humanity.
Just as he was thinking this, a man in the water suddenly lowered his head and started coughing. Gradually, with a painful expression, he began to cough up blood, and soon the bloody blood dyed the sea red.
This scene made Gordon a little embarrassed. "Well, you see, I just said that this is just an immature little experiment. After all, for us, it would take a hundred years to learn all the knowledge of the Foundation."
Looking at the white coats in front of him running back and forth in panic, Charles thought for a moment and asked, "Where did these people used for experiments come from? I hope there aren't so many death row prisoners on the island, right?"
"People from other islands volunteered to become experiment subjects as the price of being accepted." Anna walked in from outside with her arms folded across her chest.
"What? Are you angry about this too? This is the same as you using the mages in the Western Sea as living bombs. It's the end of the world, you're not going to care about this too, are you?" Anna frowned slightly.
Charles did not talk about the experimental subjects anymore. He walked up to her with a complicated expression and said, "Anna, I didn't care about your feelings before. I will try my best to avoid this kind of situation in the future."
Anna's lips just raised, and then immediately tightened, and then said in a yin and yang tone: "Wow, Charles actually apologized, this is really rare."
After she finished speaking, she turned and walked outside, but Charles stretched out his hand and held her in his arms.
Anna struggled violently but Charles did not let go. He knew that Anna was stronger than him, and if she really wanted to struggle, he would not be able to hold her.
As Charles kissed Anna deeply, her struggles gradually eased. Three minutes later, Anna pulled her tongue out of Charles' mouth.
The next second, she reached out and hugged the back of Charles' head and kissed him hard, then she easily picked him up and walked outside.
Three hours later,
"Ha~ha~ha~" Anna, lying on Charles' chest, rose and fell with his breathing.
Charles leaned slightly to the side and held Anna in his arms. "Things on the surface won't end so easily, Jia Jia. Someone up there must be responsible."
"What are you responsible for? Are you responsible for dying? If you stay in the Pit Fortress and manage everything, I won't say anything."
Charles lowered his head, buried his nose in Anna's hair and took a deep breath. "Everyone is good at something. I am better at exploring. Explorers also need leaders."
Anna immediately sat up and glared at him, "So what you just said was bullshit?"
Charles argued vigorously: "No, I mean to make up for it in other ways. You know, Lily is still in Ledger's hands!!"
"Ah! I'm going crazy!" Anna was about to stand up from the boat speechlessly, but was pulled back by Charles.
"Will you let me think about it? I really need to think about it."
Anna looked at Charles who was in great trouble, and she lay down again quietly.
"Do you think I didn't let you go up because of myself? I did it for you. I was really afraid that you would die up there. It's too dangerous."
"I know, I know." Charles kissed her on the cheek.
After they had spent some time together, they opened the door again and walked out. Anna held Charles' arm and almost leaned against him.
"Let's go, Shanshan is waiting for us outside. Our family hasn't been together for a long time." Anna said with a smile.
Charles took a step but suddenly stopped, "Wait, you interrupted me like this, I almost forgot what I came here for."
He turned to Gordon who had been waiting and said, "Take me to find that man."
Gordon first glanced at Anna who was leaning on Charles, then nodded, "Okay, please come with us."
During this process, Charles briefly told Anna what had happened.
Soon the two came to a musty cell, where a disheveled prisoner was moving his hands mechanically, kneading a piece of metal.
"His name is Hanks, and he possesses the ability to plasticize objects. After being enhanced by the Foundation, no matter how hard an object is, it can become as soft as plasticine in front of him," said Gordon.
Charles took a step forward and reached out to push the dirty hair away from his face, revealing those very beautiful sky-blue eyes, but now they were lifeless and dead.
"A woman said that you were wronged. Is that true?" Charles said, and then he reached out and pinched Anna lightly, signaling her to detect a lie.
When Charles asked for the third time, he finally responded. When his dull eyes saw Anna, his expression gradually became extremely frightened.
Sorry, I have something to do today. I will resume updating three times tomorrow.
